Planetary Crisis and Local Change is a Kaken Project engaged with the local and grassroots movements against the various effects of what is being called the Anthropocene. Below is the abstract of the project in English and Japanese.

プロジェクトの概要

「人新世(じんしんせい)」（英語：Anthropocene）とは現在審議中の新たな地質年代で、 二酸化炭素（CO2）の排出などによって、地球環境が文明の存続を脅かす状態に移行しつ つあることを意味しています。人新世の環境変化は人間活動によって引き起こされているため、その抑制には、消費の削減などの日常生活の変容や経済成長中心の社会の再考などが不可欠です。ここでは、消費や日常生活のような人間の行為のスケールの事象が、惑星 スケールの環境変化と結びつく環境政治の新たな状況が生じています。本研究の目的は、人新世におけるこの二つのスケールの関係を明らかにすることです。そのために、本研究 では、持続可能な世界を目指す社会運動の国際的ネットワークを取り上げます。これらの運動は、日常生活とそれを支えるインフラストラクチャーを作り変えることで環境負荷を削減しようとしています。ここでは、この試みの中で形成される環境、人々、科学技術の結びつきの分析をとおして、生活の変容という人間行為のスケールの事象と惑星スケールの環境変化の間に生まれつつある新たな関係がいかなるものかを明らかにしていきます。

Abstract

The anthropocene refers to a geological epoch currently under deliberation. It suggests that due to carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and other anthropogenic environmental changes, Earth is shifting to a new equilibrium that possibly threatens the survival of human civilization. Because of its anthropogenic nature, mitigating the crisis of the Anthropocene requires the transformation of everyday life including the reduction of consumption in the global north as well as the reconsideration of economic growth as the measurement of socio-economic achievement. Here, a new form of environmental politics arises. In this new politics, the issues at the human scale become closely connected to environmental processes at the planetary scale.

The purpose of this project is to elucidate close relationships between these two scales that characterize the Anthropocene. For this purpose, this research is concerned with the international networks of  social movements for a sustainable world. These movements are attempting to reduce the environmental footprint by remaking infrastructures that support everyday life in consumer societies. The project will delineate the dynamic relationships between environmental changes at the planetary scale and politics at the scale of  human action, through an analysis of the emergent interlinkages between planetary processes, human and non-human practices and technoscience.
